Cantabrians as they remembered those who lost their lives in the Orlando shooting.

As well as the airport and Isaac Theatre Royal being lit up in rainbow colours, over a hundred people met at the Dance-O-Mat in Gloucester street to hold a moment of silence followed by a moment of dance.

Organiser Sara Epperson said she wasn't sure what to expect on a cold mid weekday night.

"What I didn't expect were the number of people who jumped in to help. Who brought glowsticks or candles or bagpipes or pride flags and have really made this event ours."

Ms Epperson said the turn out has been fantastic, with so many people in the city wanting to grieve together.

Councillor Andrew Turner, who was there on behalf of the Mayor, said it shows the value of the temporary spaces in Christchurch.

"That they can be put to use very very quickly and great spaces for the community to gather as [they] have gathered in recognition of what happened in Orlando."

Mr Turner said it was great the organisers could create such an event in such a short amount of time.
