  • Auckland FC鈥檚 loss and an injury to 11-year-old Jude Beattie marred the west Auckland family鈥檚 weekend.
  • Jude Beattie was impaled by a metal post, requiring emergency surgery at Starship Children鈥檚 Hospital.
  • Auckland Transport, inspected the berm yesterday and the post had been removed and expressed hopes for Jude鈥檚 speedy recovery.

The loss by the Auckland FC and a horrific injury to an 11-year-old fan was a double blow for the Beattie family who spent the night at the Starship Children鈥檚 Hospital while their son Jude underwent emergency surgery.

The Te Atat奴 family were looking forward to a great night at the game on Saturday evening; with the night out doubling as a celebration for son Wilf鈥檚 9th birthday.

But the double-banger celebration went horribly wrong 鈥 first the loss 2-0 on the field and then the injury to Jude.

鈥淥ur three boys are avid football players so after playing their games on Saturday morning we headed with friends to Mount Smart to watch the Auckland AFC game,鈥 mum Mary Beattie said.

I heard him cry out and looked down to see blood and yellow flesh coming out of his shin where the waratah had impaled into it.

After the game, the family joined the procession out the gates heading towards their vehicle.

鈥淛ust after we鈥檇 crossed the main road, Jude was walking just in front of me 鈥 not seeing a waratah, randomly sticking out of the ground.

鈥淣ext I heard him cry out and looked down to see blood and yellow flesh coming out of his shin where the waratah had impaled into it.

鈥淲e realised he would need to go to the hospital, so I went with Jude in a taxi, waving to my husband and other three children who were all looking very worried.鈥

Beattie said Jude was in agony the entire trip.

鈥淲e arrived at Starship and Jude was in agony. While waiting to be seen [he] started sobbing saying, 鈥業 feel so awful for Wilf, it鈥檚 his birthday!鈥.鈥

She said  had been 鈥渁bsolutely wonderful鈥.

Mary said her children are close and watching Jude鈥檚 pain affected them all - and his mates, who were also at the game.

鈥淭he kids are all very close and all very empathetic so he was worrying about it ruining his brother鈥檚 birthday.鈥

Jude required surgery to repair the damage.

The injury will sideline him from  for up to four weeks.

鈥淗is Te Atat奴 team [who are undefeated for the past year] are currently playing in a tournament today and were playing with their shirts tucked in in honour of him as he鈥檚 the only one who does that,鈥 Mary said on Sunday.

鈥淣ext week he was meant to be filling in up a grade for another team for a tournament in P膩p膩moa and he鈥檚 mostly very concerned that he may not be okay for his Auckland Zones School tournament, his school team 鈥 Te Atat奴 Intermediate just won the west Auckland tournament and had qualified for the whole of Auckland.

鈥淗e also has a tournament with his normal team in P膩p膩moa Matariki weekend and was chosen to go on sports camp with school in the last week of term.

鈥淲hat was meant to be a brilliant weekend of celebration and football has turned into a weekend of worry and disappointment.鈥

Beattie said the council needed to provide some answers.

The concerned mother said she 鈥渃ouldn鈥檛 understand鈥 how the waratah had been allowed to stick out on the public path.

鈥淛ude was very lucky that it didn鈥檛 go into tendons or muscle.

鈥淚 would not want this to happen to anyone else and want to ensure that this is dealt with so that this or worse doesn鈥檛 happen to anyone else.

said a senior staff member was immediately sent to the scene after being alerted to the issue by the Herald.

A spokesperson said they were 鈥渞eally disappointed鈥 to hear about the incident.

By the time the staff member arrived at the site, the waratah had been removed from the berm. That meant there was no risk of a repeat for crowds leaving Sunday鈥檚 Warriors NRL clash at Go Media Mt Smart Stadium.

鈥淯nfortunately, that was too late for Jude and we鈥檙e hoping he has a speedy recovery and is able to get back on to the football field as quickly as possible,鈥 the spokesperson said.

The Auckland Transport spokesperson said the organisation was responsible for more than 7500km.

While footpaths and roads were regularly inspected, the spokesperson said AT 鈥渄o rely on Aucklanders reporting issues with berms to us, particularly in commercial areas鈥.

鈥淲hen issues are reported to us, we aim to promptly send out our contractors to address these, especially if there is a safety risk.鈥
