Hundreds of boy racers spent Saturday night in a cat-and-mouse chase with police across Auckland as the Prime Minister warns that the drivers鈥 鈥渄ays are coming to an end鈥.
Car enthusiasts had promoted last night as the 鈥淎uckland invasion鈥 and the Herald tracked groups of vehicles to several locations 鈥 including Manukau, Onehunga, Westgate, Penrose and Drury.
At each spot, police vehicles 鈥 including marked cars, unmarked units and vans 鈥 were deployed, keeping close eyes on those gathered. The Eagle helicopter, too, kept watch from above.
Each time the cops arrived, the group used Snapchat to share details for the next location, one driver revealed.
The final meeting spot was at the intersection of Waikato鈥檚 State Highway 2 and Rawiri Rd.
Hundreds of vehicles descended there, with several drivers revving engines, performing burnouts and drifting across the road.

Attendees were seen letting off fireworks and filming the cars as they drifted metres away from their bodies.
While the Eagle helicopter zeroed in on the meet-up, the Herald understands officers were told to hold back 鈥 moving in only after the illegal driving had ceased.
鈥榃e鈥檙e not going anywhere鈥
Drivers who the Herald spoke to across the night claimed the racers weren鈥檛 looking to cause trouble, only that they needed somewhere that could properly accommodate them.
鈥淎ll we want to do is show off our rides, do some skids and burn rubber 鈥 it鈥檚 life,鈥 one said.
鈥淲e need somewhere to do it, straight up. We鈥檙e not going anywhere.鈥
鈥淚t鈥檚 a waste of police resources eh, but just let us be us,鈥 another said.
鈥淲e don鈥檛 got anywhere to go, so we hit streets that aren鈥檛 residential. Simple as.鈥

鈥榊our days are coming to an end鈥
Police would not comment on last night鈥檚 antics, but earlier said they were aware of 鈥渁nti-social road user gatherings鈥 taking place regularly across the country.
鈥淭hese events can carry huge risk for those who take part or actively participate in these reckless and dangerous behaviours,鈥 police said in a statement.
鈥淧olice will not tolerate behaviours which endangers [sic] others and causes damage to roads and property.鈥
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, speaking to media today, said it鈥檚 been 鈥渋ncredibly frustrating鈥 for communities that are having to deal with boy racers 鈥渟everal times a week鈥.
鈥淵ou鈥檝e actually got to be a safe driver ... You can鈥檛 just end up causing inconvenience and pain and suffering for your fellow Kiwi citizens.鈥
He acknowledged the Government has legislation coming before the House that aims to impose a crackdown on boy racing activities.
鈥淲e want people to be safe and we don鈥檛 want people inconvenienced. Communities are fed up with it,鈥 Luxon said.
鈥淪o I鈥檓 sorry, but the boy racers out there, your days are coming to an end because we鈥檝e got some pretty tough penalties coming that way around your cars.鈥
