Robert Taylor, former guitarist of New Zealand rock band Dragon, has died.
The group formed in Auckland in 1972 is best known for its songs April Sun in Cuba and Rain.
Taylor was Dragon鈥檚 lead guitarist from 1974 to 1979 and again from 1982 to 1985.
Audio Culture shared the news of Taylor鈥檚 death on Facebook, writing, 鈥淸We are] sad to learn of the death of one of New Zealand鈥檚 best-known lead guitarists鈥.
鈥淥n the recording of the band鈥檚 big hit 鈥楢pril Sun in Cuba鈥 鈥 written by keyboardist Paul Hewson on a broken guitar 鈥 it is Taylor who plays the chunky two chords on which the song is based.
鈥淚n 1977, just as the band began to have its string of big radio hits, Taylor penned a short account of his life thus far: 鈥楤orn in Waipukarau, New Zealand 鈥 son of an ice cream manufacturer and housewife 鈥 rugby and blues licks with the M膩oris 鈥 confirmed in the Anglican church鈥 won a scholarship to Wellington Uni 鈥 majored in English 鈥 English lecturer dealt dope, ran a rock band: goodbye studies 鈥 joined acid-symphonic rock鈥檔鈥檙oll band Mammal ...鈥 ."
Taylor joined Dragon at the end of 1974, after the demise of Wellington band Mammal, the post wrote.
鈥淎t the time, Dragon had already released two albums, Universal Radio, and Scented Gardens for the Blind.
鈥淚n early 1975 a song Taylor wrote, 鈥楨ducation鈥, became Dragon鈥檚 next single.鈥
New Zealand composer and songwriter Peter Dasnet wrote on Facebook, 鈥淚鈥檓 beyond sad to hear that Robert Taylor has died鈥.
鈥淗e had been unwell for a while but we didn鈥檛 expect him to go quite so soon,鈥 he wrote.
鈥淲e all know he was a great guitar player in the original version of NZ band Dragon.
鈥淟ike most musicians he had a lot of stories to tell, and Robert had a particular turn of phrase, a wonderfully articulate and amusing take on the world.
鈥淲e spent many a happy hour there talking bollocks of the most rarified kind, accompanied by a drink or three.
鈥淩.I.P. my friend.鈥
