
Oscar-winning British actor Maggie Smith, a star of stage and screen for more than seven decades, died in hospital in London on Friday, her sons announced, prompting a flood of tributes led by King Charles III.
鈥淚t is with great sadness we have to announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith. She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning,鈥 Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens said in a statement.
During the course of her career, Smith, who won a Tony, two Oscars, three Golden Globes and five Baftas.
And she achieved late-career international fame for her depiction of the acerbic Dowager Countess of Grantham Violet Crawley in the hit television series 鈥淒ownton Abbey鈥.
Britain鈥檚 head of state Charles called her 鈥渁 national treasure鈥 who was admired around the world.
The Royal Instagram account shared a tribute to Dame Maggie Smith.
He also paid tribute to her 鈥渨armth and wit that shone through both on and off the stage鈥, posting a photograph of him sharing a joke with the actress.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer also called her a 鈥渢rue national treasure鈥 while the Bafta TV and the film academy saluted 鈥渁 legend of British stage and screen鈥.
Born in 1934 in Oxford in central England, the daughter of an Oxford professor of pathology, Smith made her stage debut in 1952 with the Oxford University Dramatic Society.
She won a best actress Oscar for the 1969 drama 鈥淭he Prime of Miss Jean Brodie鈥 based on Muriel Spark鈥檚 novel, and best supporting actress for her role in the 1978 Neil Simon comedy 鈥淐alifornia Suite鈥.
鈥淎n intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end,鈥 her sons, both actors, said.
鈥淪he leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother,鈥 they said, adding their thanks for all the 鈥渒ind messages and support鈥 they had received.

Famed for her scene-stealing charisma, Smith鈥檚 long and successful career got started with a string of successes in London鈥檚 West End and on Broadway in the 1950s.
She famously appeared opposite Laurence Olivier in an adaptation of Shakespeare鈥檚 鈥淥thello鈥 in 1959.
This led to her joining Olivier鈥檚 celebrated 1960s National Theatre company where she earned critical acclaim alongside her husband, the actor Robert Stephens.
Smith鈥檚 marriage to heavy-drinking Stephens, with whom she had her two sons, collapsed in 1973 and they divorced two years later.
She remarried shortly after to the screenwriter Beverley Cross, who died in 1998.
Despite her serious acting reputation, Smith also appeared in lighter Hollywood hits such as 1992鈥瞫 鈥淪ister Act鈥, and 1993 sequel 鈥淪ister Act 2鈥.
Whoopi Goldberg, the lead actress in both films, wrote on Instagram that 鈥淢aggie Smith was a great woman and a brilliant actress.
鈥淚 still can鈥檛 believe I was lucky enough to work with the 鈥榦ne-of-a-kind鈥,鈥 she added.
In recent decades, some of her best known films included 鈥淕osford Park鈥 (2001), 鈥淭he Best Exotic Marigold Hotel鈥 (2012) and 鈥淭he Lady in the Van鈥 (2015).
Her work on the wildly popular 鈥淒ownton Abbey鈥 and the 鈥淗arry Potter鈥 films also introduced her to a younger generation.
Such was the appeal of 鈥淒ownton Abbey鈥 she said in 2017 she could no longer go out without being recognised.
鈥淚t鈥檚 ridiculous 鈥 I led a perfectly normal life until Downton Abbey,鈥 she told the British Film Institute. 鈥淚 would go to theatres, I would go to galleries and things like that on my own. And now I can鈥檛,鈥 she said.
Julian Fellowes, creator and writer of Downton Abbey, said Smith had a 鈥渕arvellous instinctive grasp, she could make you cry your eyes out one minute and laugh like a drain the next without turning into someone different.
鈥淚 realised I was working with a great genius,鈥 he added.
Actor Hugh Bonneville, who played the son of the dowager duchess in the period drama, said: 鈥淎nyone who ever shared a scene with Maggie will attest to her sharp eye, sharp wit and formidable talent.
鈥淪he was a true legend of her generation and thankfully will live on in so many magnificent screen performances. My condolences to her boys and wider family.鈥
Smith was made a Dame of the British Empire in 1990 by Queen Elizabeth II.
