The Los Angeles-based team of an Auckland-born creative house has landed an Emmy for its collaboration with Uber and its quirky spin on college life in a rare win for a New Zealand company.
On the Creative Arts Emmy ceremony鈥檚 second evening in the United States, Special Group 鈥 the lead creative partner for Uber Eats in the US and Canada 鈥 was handed the prized award for Outstanding Commercial for Uber鈥檚 鈥淏rian Cox Goes To College鈥 ad.
The October 2024 commercial, designed to promote the student discount on Uber鈥檚 paid membership programme Uber One, follows the acclaimed Scottish actor as he heads to university as a freshman aged 78.
鈥淭hese type of awards are normally won by brands like Apple and Nike 鈥 so to have Uber Eats and Special finally break through and win one of the top awards in the world is exceptionally rewarding,鈥 said Special Group co-founder and chief executive Tony Bradbourne.
During the ad, Cox 鈥 who trained as a Shakespearean actor and had award-winning roles in television dramas Nuremberg and Succession 鈥 is introduced to an art history and political science student, whom he tells: 鈥淵ou鈥檒l make a great barista one day.鈥
It鈥檚 eventually revealed that Cox only returned to university to access 鈥淯ber One for Students鈥, which provides subscription access to discounts on food deliveries and rides at a reduced price.
The star has food delivered at various points through the 117-second ad, including during a lecture and while studying in the library.
Bradbourne said the level of international attention the ad has received is a 鈥済roundbreaking achievement鈥 for the agency.
A team of more than 40 people helped put together the award-winning ad, with production company O Positive and client Uber also sharing the Emmy among their respective teams.
鈥淭his Emmy represents the culmination of years of work from our international teams,鈥 Bradbourne said.
鈥淪pecial Australia secured the Uber Eats account in 2016, creating award-winning work that built Uber Eats鈥 confidence in us, leading them to become our foundation client in the United States.鈥
Bradbourne said Special has been committed to delivering eccentric, conversation-starting campaigns for over 17 years and is 鈥減roud to be the first New Zealand-founded creative company with offices around the world鈥.
鈥淭his is just the beginning of our journey, and I鈥檇 like to thank every single member of the team and every single client for believing in our vision.鈥
Viewers on YouTube have raved over the ad鈥檚 creative spin, with one claiming it was the first time they鈥檇 鈥渨atched an ad with laughter鈥.
鈥淏est commercial I鈥檝e seen in years. Businesses take note,鈥 another wrote.
鈥淚 literally graduated this past spring with a PhD at 58. This made me really happy,鈥 posted another.
The 77th Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony was held at the Peacock Theatre in downtown Los Angeles over the weekend, recognising artistic and technical achievements in the American television industry in the year to May 31, 2025.
