Lorde has released her next single, titled Hammer.

The song is the opening track from Virgin, Lorde鈥檚 fourth album, which will be released on June 27.

Announcing 贬补尘尘别谤鈥檚&苍产蝉辫;release on her Instagram this week Lorde said the song was 鈥渁n ode to city life and horniness tbh.鈥

Those themes are laid out lyrically from the get-go 鈥 the first verse opens with the words, 鈥淭here鈥檚 a heat in the pavement, my mercury鈥檚 raising, don鈥檛 know if it鈥檚 love or if it鈥檚 ovulation.鈥

The lyrics of the song, which is 3m 13s long, dually detail the singer exploring lower Manhattan and also setting out on a journey of self-discovery.

In the second verse, Lorde sings, 鈥淭oday I鈥檒l go to Canal St, they鈥檙e piercing my ears, I鈥檓 makin鈥 a wish when the needle goes in, Take an aura picture, Read it and tell me who I am.鈥

Unlike the previously released singles from Virgin, Man Of The Year and What Was That, a music video for Hammer hasn鈥檛 yet been released. A trailer for the video can be viewed on the singer鈥檚 YouTube account, which shows the 28-year-old running through London鈥檚 Hampstead Heath. Directed by Renell Medrano, the video is expected to be published today.

In May, Rolling Stone journalist Brittany Spanos talked to the Aucklander about her gender identity, after previewing that on Hammer Lorde sings 鈥淪ome days I鈥檓 a woman, some days I鈥檓 a man鈥.

Lorde shared that fellow singer Chappell Roan had inquired whether she was non-binary, to which she responded, 鈥淚鈥檓 a woman except for the days when I鈥檓 a man鈥.

鈥淚 know that鈥檚 not a very satisfying answer, but there鈥檚 a part of me that is really resistant to boxing it up.鈥

Lorde said she now described herself as 鈥渋n the middle gender-颅wise" but called herself a cis woman and used she/her pronouns.

She also acknowledged her privilege as a 鈥渨ealthy, cis, white woman,鈥 saying it allowed her to explore identity privately without facing the risks many others do when their gender doesn鈥檛 align with their birth assignment.

Lorde also told the magazine she was 鈥渢errified鈥 to open up about the album.

鈥淭here鈥檚 going to be a lot of people who don鈥檛 think I鈥檓 a good girl any more, a good woman. It鈥檚 over,鈥 she told Spanos.

鈥淚t will be over for a lot of people; for some people, I will have arrived. I鈥檒l be where they always hoped I鈥檇 be.鈥

In the final lines of the song, Lorde says, 鈥滻t鈥檚 a f***ed up world, been to hell and back, but I鈥檝e sent you a postcard from the edge."

Hammer is the last single the singer will put out before Virgin is released next Friday.
