A United States federal judge has thrown out a defamation case filed by Canadian rapper Drake against his own label Universal Music Group over Kendrick Lamar鈥檚 viral diss track.

In 2024, the superstar rappers exchanged a litany of increasingly vitriolic songs, with Lamar delivering the major blow with his chart-topping 鈥淣ot Like Us鈥.

In his suit filed in January, Drake accused Universal 鈥 which is behind both artists 鈥 of betraying him in favour of profits by promoting the song, which features punchlines that accuse him of paedophilia.

The lawsuit also cited the track鈥檚 promotion as causing a 鈥減hysical threat to Drake鈥檚 safety鈥 as well as a 鈥渂ombardment of online harassment鈥.

But Judge Jeannette Vargas said Lamar鈥檚 lyrics about the 38-year-old Canadian artist 鈥 born Aubrey Drake Graham 鈥 amounted to 鈥渘on-actionable opinion鈥.

鈥淭he issue in this case is whether 鈥楴ot Like Us鈥 can reasonably be understood to convey as a factual matter that Drake is a paedophile or that he has engaged in sexual relations with minors,鈥 Vargas wrote in her ruling.

鈥淚n light of the overall context in which the statements in the recording were made, the Court holds that it cannot.鈥

In a statement after the ruling, Universal Music Group called the suit 鈥渁n affront to all artists and their creative expression and never should have seen the light of day鈥.

鈥淲e鈥檙e pleased with the court鈥檚 dismissal and look forward to continuing our work successfully promoting Drake鈥檚 music and investing in his career.鈥

Lamar, a Pulitzer Prize winner who is also 38, went on to perform the Grammy-winning 鈥淣ot Like Us鈥 as the headliner of the Super Bowl halftime show in February.

He cut the profanity and the word 鈥減aedophile鈥 but didn鈥檛 stop short of the money line, rapping 鈥渢ryna strike a chord and it鈥檚 probably A-minoooooor鈥 on live television in front of more than 130 million viewers.
