A road rage incident in Christchurch has left a man with extensive injuries and a family grieving for their new puppy.
Police say a man driving a four-wheel drive near the Eyre River, which runs into the Waimakariri River, was signalled to slow down by a father out walking with young children and a puppy.
Detective Senior Sergeant Rex Barnett says the driver instead made attempts to knock the father down and ran over him at least once.
The man's been treated in Christchurch Hospital for injuries to his hands, head, shoulder and ankle.
The 10 month old puppy had to be euthanised because of the extensive injuries it sustained after being hit by the vehicle.
A 51 year old man has been arrested and will appear in the Christchurch District Court tomorrow morning.
