Kiwifruit growers want greater control of their industry.
A large-scale referendum has been held attracting 650 submissions from around 80 percent of the country's kiwifruit production market.
The chair of the project, Neil Richardson, has delivered the message from growers saying they don't want to have to go to the government every time a change is warranted in the industry.
"The industry has voted very strongly that they want to be treated just like any other company in New Zealand under the Companies Act of 1993...they want to be treated like other companies."
Neil Richardson says he's written to Minister for Primary Industries, Nathan Guy, to pass on the industry's feedback.
