Menzies Aviation Limited has been ordered to pay $150,000鈥痜or Biosecurity Act breaches.
The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) said the case related to potential pest escape risk.
MPI said Menzies operated two transitional鈥痜acilities at Auckland Airport for鈥痠mported鈥痑irfreight,鈥痗ontainers鈥痑nd packaging.
The ministry said it told Menzies to ensure鈥痝oods鈥痺ere鈥痺rapped鈥痠n plastic,鈥痺ith no鈥痝aps or holes,鈥痶o prevent any鈥痯otential unwanted pests鈥痜rom escaping.
鈥淚t鈥檚鈥痑t these facilities that uncleared鈥痳isk goods go through鈥痶he necessary鈥痓iosecurity clearance,鈥 MPI said.
MPI regional manager Aleshea Allen said quarantine officers鈥痜ound鈥痵ix consignments鈥痮f uncleared鈥痳isk goods鈥痠mproperly鈥痺rapped.
鈥淚n addition,鈥痵enior quarantine officers鈥痜ound the inspection room鈥痑nd facilities did not meet hygiene鈥痵tandards鈥痑nd鈥痺ere鈥痷nfit for purpose.鈥
Allen said that created a potential biosecurity risk鈥痑t鈥痶he border.
MPI said there was no biosecurity equipment present to deal with risks鈥痑nd no records available鈥痶o鈥痙ocument cleaning of the room and staff training.
鈥淥ur expectation is that鈥痑ll companies that handle imported goods鈥痬eet the requirements of the Biosecurity Act,鈥 MPI added.
鈥淭he rules are there for a reason and the stakes are high鈥痑s unwanted pests and鈥痙iseases could have a devastating effect on our communities and economy,鈥 Allen said.
The High Court at Auckland penalised Menzies for failing to comply鈥痺ith the MPI compliance鈥痮rder.
It was not immediately clear if Menzies was considering an appeal against the penalty.
