A West Auckland eatery, praised by critics as 鈥渙ne of the loveliest cheap eats in town鈥, is set to close its doors less than three months after winning a best new restaurant award.
In a message posted to 鈥渄ear friends and valued patrons鈥, Glendene鈥檚 Moe Palae鈥 Myanmar Restaurant announced its plans to cease business on December 22.
鈥淲e are deeply grateful for the love, laughter, and loyalty you鈥檝e shown us.鈥
The Great North Rd eatery said the 鈥渃urrent economic situation鈥 was behind the shuttering.

Viva鈥檚 dining out editor Jesse Mulligan spotlighted the restaurant in October and said the hidden gem, which was opposite a cemetery, was 鈥渁lmost impossible to find鈥 but worth hunting out.
鈥淭his menu is a real treat and a great chance to try a style of food you鈥檝e probably never come across. Think of it as a mix of Chinese, Indian and Thai, with a few indigenous flourishes.鈥
Mulligan said the suburban restaurant had a 鈥渉uge鈥 menu that boasted 鈥50 things I wanted to order, but for variety I chose what looked like Moe Palae鈥檚 signature rice noodles 鈥 served with shrimp, chicken, and a pretty moreish pan-fry sauce鈥.
Casting his verdict on the dish, Mulligan said that 鈥渇or $20 it鈥檚 one of the loveliest cheap eats in town鈥.
Moe Palae鈥 won the Best New Restaurant at Metro Magazine鈥檚 Top 50 Restaurant Awards in September.
On its website, the restaurant outlines Myanmar鈥檚 cuisine as being as vibrant as its culture, 鈥渙ffering a symphony of bold, fresh flavours influenced by neighbouring Thailand, India and China. Meals emphasise balance, with dishes that are sweet, sour, spicy and savoury.鈥
Moe Palae鈥檚 head chef Hein Htet Aung won MasterChef Myanmar in 2023 and is quoted online as saying: 鈥淚t鈥檚 not precise ingredients or recipes that make a perfect dish 鈥 it鈥檚 the passion behind every preparation that creates something truly great.鈥
Announcing the impending closure, the owners extended their gratitude 鈥渢o our incredible team and every guest who dined with us: thank you for being part of our story鈥.
They also clarified they were not selling the business and hoped they would be able to return in the future, 鈥渟tronger and sweeter鈥.
